Stop the FCC from Defunding PEG Channels -
Co-Sponsor The Protect Community Television Act
The FCC is trying to redefine what a franchise fee is - and it will radically reduce the level of monetary support available to run PEG access channels across the United States.
PEG access channels provide government coverage that allows transparency so citizens can monitor local government actions - something vital to the health of local democracy.
PEG access channels provide local content in communities that are not served by the broadcast industry and are increasingly under-served by newspapers. They help prevent "media deserts" in towns and cities across the US and ensure diversity of opinion at the local level.
Congress should stop the FCC from trying to re-write the 1984 Cable Act to financially starve local communities and our PEG channels. Please co-sponsor the Protect Community Television Act.

PEG access channels are needed to provide the community access to its local government through its programming and coverage of meetings and events. Folks rely on local access channels to help them be informed about what is going on in their city or town.

Jenny Y. from Wadsworth, OH writes:
I’m a videographer in Wadsworth, Ohio who produces local content for small businesses and many of those business use WCTV to continue promoting those videos because we have this opportunity available — I was nominated for an award because of a video that was played on WCTV, proof people are seeing the content, these message and people are watching! It would be a great disservice to our community if those in our town who have access to WCTV, who produce for WCTV and who work for WCTV were forced with limitations because it suddenly doesn’t feel important to YOU. Spend a moment in the shoes of hard working individuals living in a hard working community and understand that just because YOU, Government/FCC, are not watching or personally affected by this, that many other communities will be. We work hard to make Wadsworth, Ohio a fantastic place to live and WCTV has a huge part in that! It is a source for local fun and information. Knock it off. PEG is alive and well FCC.

My young daughter and I have been involved in our community TV station, WCTV in Wadsworth, OH for the past 6 years. We’ve both been provided many opportunities to grow and get involved in our town. Children learn through the influences of media and Community TV provides a vital positive impact by encouraging their involvement, highlighting their accomplishments and showing the many events happening in their city. A strong sense of belonging creates solid communities which thrive economically. As a taxpayer, I am proud contribute to this worthwhile institution as opposed having a tax cut. While it may seem like reducing funding for PEG channels saves money, the ripple effect of the long term impact would be detrimental to everyone.

Mako L. from Fresno, CA writes:
Don't be fooled ! PEG fees are provided by the CITIZENS in each community who PAY for cable television. The fee guarantees each citizen in their community will have fair and equal access to a channel that will provide local government meeting coverage, local education and student activity coverage, and public access to a television station for workshops, skills training, program development, and production for the citizens in that community. This is the most important local civic tool and resource in every community throughout the country. Don't let the FCC silence every local community in the country by charging back services to reduce and remove the citizen's fees supporting these significant and vital platforms for freedom of speech and civic engagement.

Public access provides information vital for an informed citizenry. It also creates community. Too often local events are not covered by any other media outlet. As our population ages it is even more important to provide access to local events, meetings so all can stay involved in their communities.

As a Verizon customer, I do not agree with the actions of Verizon attempting to altering the Cable Act, which violates the Constitutional rights of all American citizens who enjoy PEG channels, which provide programs that are valued to their communities. These are self governing communities, that are protected from corporate or special interest impediment of the Citizens' Constitutional rights to utilize communications, and share access to the air waves.
